The script you are seeing in front of you is the phplynx directory script (free version), With a bit of imagination you can use the script t run a full portal system with all the items you see on this main page driven from the admin control centers static pages area.
You can add graphics, text, colours, links, linked graphics and much much more. As I have already mentioned everything on this main page is driven from the Admin CP which enables you the admin to add and remove content as and when you wish.
This area you are currently reading is intended for Latest News releases from your website, ie. special offers, discounts, promotions, links, anything you like. Graphics can also be added from the admin area to display within this area. A simple Example is shown below......
